Station comparison, KBSO VS. WISH

When Reina Broadcasting launched Classic Hits Retro 104.1 on 1150 KCCT and a 104.1 translator in Corpus Christie in 2019, I didn’t think much of it. The format gained attention by industry writer Shawn Ross earlier this year when it moved from that pair of frequencies to 94.7 KBSO. It is the columns written by Mr. Ross that have inspired these columns. When Shawn Ross did a monitor of this station in the first part of 2024 shortly after the move, I knew I had to check it out, as it instantly reminded me of another station I had discovered about nine months earlier, WISH 98.9 in the Marian-Carbondale area of Illinois. This station is one of the most underrated 90s and 2000s stations out there right now. While Retro is listed as Classic Hits and does play a couple of 80s titles, Wish is strictly 90s and 2000s with some post-2010 songs thrown in. Unfortunately, these stations are built on the strength of their music alone, as the imaging is pretty lackluster on both stations. Here’s Retro 94.7 at noon local time on May 13:

  • Bell Biv Divo – Poison
  • Jennifer Lopez – Waiting for Tonight
  • Duran Duran – Notorious
  • Marvin Gay – Got to Give it Up
  • Katy Perry – Hot N Cold
  • A Touch of Class – Around the World
  • Madonna – Show Me
  • Santana – Smooth
  • Pitbull F. Afrojack – Give Me Everything
  • Right Said Fred – I’m Too Sexy
  • Sideview – Bizarre Love Triangle
  • Big Mountain – Baby I Love Your Way

Here’s WISH on May 14 at about 12:08 P.M. local time:

  • Lady Gaga – Marry the Night
  • Exhibit – Front 2 Back
  • Erasure – A Little Respect
  • Avicii – Wake Me Up
  • Seal – Don’t Cry
  • Mary J. Blige – Deep Inside
  • Nelly F. Kelly Roland – Delemma
  • Gavin Degraw – I Don’t Want to Be
  • Backstreet Boys – As Long As You Love Me
  • Semisonic – Closing Time
