It’s the time of year to look back on the year that was, so that’s what we’re doing this week, looking back at 2024.

The single biggest story of the year was the bankruptcy of Audacy. With that complete, it means that all the major radio companies have gone bankrupt in the last 14 years, and all but Townsquare in the last 6. Townsquare itself was formed out of the bankruptcy of Regent, which then was a regional player, but is why I’m including it in the count.

While Audacy’s bankruptcy was the single biggest story of the year, the financial issues of radio in general were a major theme throughout the year. We saw cuts at all of the major groups except Townsquare and Audacy this year, and some smaller groups as well. While we didn’t see cuts at Salem, they continue to sell assets.

Next week, we look ahead. What do I think 2025 will bring?
