The Smooth Jazz format had been declining for years by late December 2010. It was then that Seattle’s smooth jazz station, KWJZ, flipped to Modern AC Click 98.9 two days after Christmas without warning. I was told by a friend later that members of the station’s loyal listener club did receive an email on the 23rd, but nobody in the industry saw it coming. I discovered the station the next day, and it was all I listened to for the next roughly three months. I didn’t have much in the way of recording equipment back then so this wasn’t recorded by me, but this was recorded January 7, 2011, when the station still had its KWJZ calls. Next week, we’ll hear the station a few years later when it has staffed up and gone through numerous tweaks.
